Breakfast at locals

Let’s start our day by exploring Saqqara’s neighbourhoods. A short drive from your Cairo hotel along Maroutyia canal and we are in Badrashin area, known for its lush gardens, green vegetable fields and place to the 1st ever built pyramid in Egypt – Step pyramid of king Joser. Before exploring the necropolis we will stop at a Blue Lotus guest house for a traditional Egyptian breakfast: feeter, traditional fellahi bread and cheese, eggs, fresh salad, pickled eggplant and local honey, all freshly prepared by Um Mahmoud.

Countryside walk along the fields

After our authentic breakfast let’s have a countryside walk in Saqqara village where we can meet some friendly farmers along the way, stop and chat with them, they will show us their crops, animals and even their unique irrigation techniques.

Carpet school and handicrafts activities

Visit to a Palm Tree Handicrafts Workshop will introduce us to the ancient craft of working palm branches to make boxes and baskets, which is fast becoming an endangered traditional practice. Let’s stop by and watch locals work their magic.

Saqqara is known as one of the bedrocks of carpet weaving and kilim artistry, with many schools operating in the vicinity of the Saqqara necropolis. We will visit one of Saqqara’s weaving schools to see local artisans at work creating heritage craft, and making one of a kind pieces. You may even try your hands at weaving yourself with some help of the local experts. 

Exploring Saqqara sights

Now time to visit the famous Saqqara necropolis, walk around the Step pyramid, enter inside some Nobles’ tombs, discover Serapeum.

Sunset at Saqqara

Now as it’s getting darker let’s enjoy a desert sunset. We will climb a small hill in the vicinity of Saqqara where we can watch the sun drops on the horizon with the pyramids framing the scene beautifully.

Farm-to-table dinner at locals

Let’s end up our day at Lowhet Saqqara which is situated at the edge of the desert, in a unique location which has served as the set for filming many Egyptian movies and TV series. A local family will offer us freshly prepared home cooked meals full of fresh ingredients like farm-to-table grilled chicken and vegetables, traditional rice, freshly picked salad, and fresh fruit. Breath in the fresh countryside air and enjoy the scenic view of the pyramids. End the meal with sweetened tea by the campfire.
